Jesus said to them, “He
who is without sin among you let him throw a stone at her first.” John 8:7
Social media has
become a source of news for many people. When you read about someone’s arrest,
everyone is quick to judge and offer punishments for the offender, sometimes
even death. Many of those who comment don’t even know the person, much less the
entire situation, but are quick to judge and it becomes a feeding frenzy on
that person. That person’s character is marked forever by people’s opinions and
their family suffers from the negative comments.
In today’s passage, a
woman was caught in the act of adultery and brought before Jesus to get His opinion
on what should be done to her. Jewish law required that person be stoned to
death, yet Jesus had a different view of the situation. Anyone who was without
sin should be the first to cast a stone. Well, the ONLY ONE in the room
qualified was Jesus Christ Himself. One by one, the accusers walked out of the
room, leaving only Jesus and this woman.
When Jesus had
raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, HE said to her, “Woman, where
are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one Lord.”
And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.” John 8:10-11
I ask you; how does
God expect us to respond?
Jesus didn’t condemn
her, but forgave her and said for her not to sin any longer. Although we are
not in a position to grant forgiveness, we are in a position to pray for that
person, and those involved in the situation.
Confess your trespasses
to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The
effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. James 5:16. When you pray, you
leave the judging to God and ask for His help to heal that person of their sins
so they will sin no more in that manner. Who do you know today that needs your
prayers?
