Be angry, and do not sin, do not let the sun go down on your wrath. Ephesians 4:26
Have you ever been
angry at someone? Maybe it was for good reason, possibly they offended or hurt
you in some way. Whatever they did, anger was the result of the conflict. Today’s
passage pretty much says it’s ok to get angry, but don’t let it result in sin,
and definitely don’t carry it to bed with you.
What is sin in the presence
of anger? Hate. Hate is just the opposite of love and God makes it very clear
there is no place in your heart for Him when your heart if full of hate (Matthew
5:21-22). God is love and He expects you to forgive your offender
through the power of His love working in your life. Hatred stirs up
strife, but love covers all sins (Proverbs 10:12)
Hurtful words. Some
people, when angry, use tough words in the heat of the moment, which do not
bring glory to God (James
1:19-20). It sets you back for a moment in your relationship with
God and oftentimes will tarnish your witness. Be careful what you say when
angry: A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger
Proverbs 15:1.
The discretion of a
man makes him slow to anger, and his glory is to overlook a transgression.
Proverbs 19:11
Whither it’s a
co-worker, friend, neighbor or your spouse, find it in your heart to love that
person and give God the glory when you temper your anger towards someone. Keep
yourself in check the next time someone makes you angry and God will bless you
in that moment of tension.
