For your Maker is your husband, The Lord of hosts is His name; and your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel; He is called the God of the whole earth. Isaiah 54:5

Throughout the bible, Jesus Christ is called the Bridegroom of His people, those who are children of God (Christians or Disciples). Consider it a union between husband and wife with all the parameters within the bonds of a traditional marriage. In case you haven’t attended a wedding ceremony lately, let me refresh you on wedding vows typically repeated by the bride and groom.

“I, _____, take thee, _____, to be my wedded wife (husband), to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, til death do us part."

Does this vow resemble your relationship to Jesus Christ? Are you continually faithful unto Him? Does your love for Him remain steady, even in times of difficulty? Does your love for Him remain steady, even when it feels like He isn’t present in your life? Scripture makes it very clear that our Lord and Savior never abandons us, even when we fail to live up to His standards. His love is “unconditional” in nature. Can you say the same is true for you?

As a child of God, I believe it’s necessary for us to recite these vows on a regular basis, to remind us (me included) that no matter what happens in life, we are bound to God through Jesus Christ. There are many things and people in this world that vie for our attention and if left unchecked, can cause you to turn away from God and pursue pleasures outside the bond of your relationship with Him. That’s why it’s so important to stay in the word every day, pray without ceasing, and never forget the great sacrifice He provided you, so you can commune with Him, just as you would your spouse. Maybe today is a good day to renew your vows to God. Blessings!
